5 Tips to Help your Child Start a New School

Whether your child is just starting daycare, or you are switching to a new center, there are lots of things you can do to help prepare your family for this big transition. Below are some tips to help calm nerves and prepare for a great school year!

Starting at a new school can be hard for the entire family! Some kids may jump right in, while others may need a little extra support to get through the transition.

  1. Read books about starting school with your child. Seeing stories and allowing your little one to relate to characters can help calm some pre-school jitters.

  2. Say a proper goodbye to your child, maybe even create a "goodbye ritual". Creating a rhythm for their day and helping them see that routine will help minimize emotional challenges. As tempting as it may be, try not to sneak off.

  3. Ask them about their day at pickup! Get them excited about returning to school the next day. Ask them what they are looking forward to doing with their teachers and friends.

  4. Stay positive! We know it is a big transition for both you and your child, and you may get emotional. Try to stay optimistic in front of your little one to set an example.

  5. Be patient. Some days will be easy, and some days may be tougher. It'll take some time for all of you to adjust and become familiar with the new environment and routine.
