A Local Parent's Guide to Outdoor Adventures

One of the best parts of raising a family in the Denver metro area is having access to so many incredible parks and playgrounds. Whether you're looking for a quick stop after preschool, a weekend adventure, or a place to enjoy a picnic and let the kids explore, Lakewood and Denver offer no shortage of wonderful outdoor spaces.

At The Summit Academy, we believe some of the best learning happens outside. Climbing, running, exploring nature, using imagination, and making new friends all help children build confidence, coordination, creativity, and independence.

Here are some of our favorite family-friendly parks near our Lakewood and Denver campuses.

Lakewood Favorites

Carmody Park

If you could only visit one playground in Lakewood, Carmody Park would be near the top of our list.

This beautiful park features one of the area's largest inclusive playgrounds, designed so children of all abilities can play together. You'll find climbing structures, slides, swings, musical play features, plenty of shade, picnic areas, and wide open spaces for running and exploring.

Why families love it:

  • Inclusive playground

  • Large climbing structures

  • Picnic shelters

  • Walking paths

  • Great for playdates

Morse Park

Morse Park is a favorite for imaginative children.

Its castle-themed playground encourages pretend play with towers, bridges, climbing features, slides, and plenty of opportunities for little adventurers to create their own stories.

It's a park that invites creativity just as much as physical activity.

Bear Creek Lake Park

Looking for more than just a playground?

Bear Creek Lake Park is perfect for spending an entire morning or afternoon outdoors. Families can enjoy scenic walking trails, lakes, wildlife, picnic areas, beaches, fishing, and plenty of room for games and exploration. It's a wonderful place to reconnect with nature.

Belmar Park

Belmar Park offers a quieter outdoor experience.

The paved walking paths around the lake are perfect for little explorers who enjoy spotting ducks, turtles, birds, and other wildlife. Bring a picnic or simply enjoy a peaceful walk together.

Coyote Gulch Park

This neighborhood favorite features a fun playground, open green space, basketball courts, and room to run. It's an easy, relaxed park that many Lakewood families return to again and again.

Denver Favorites

Crestmoor Park

Just minutes from our Denver campus, Crestmoor Park is one of our favorite neighborhood parks.

Recently updated, the playground offers modern equipment, open grassy areas, mature trees, and plenty of room for children to run, climb, and play. It's an ideal destination for a morning outing or an after-school adventure.

Why families love it:

  • Updated playground

  • Large open fields

  • Beautiful neighborhood setting

  • Plenty of shade

  • Great picnic space

Observatory Park

Observatory Park is a beautiful neighborhood destination with wide open lawns, a playground, and peaceful walking paths.

Bring a ball, scooters, or simply enjoy the playground before taking a relaxing stroll through one of Denver's most charming parks.

Washington Park

A Denver classic, Washington Park has something for everyone.

Families enjoy the large playground, beautiful lakes, flower gardens, paved trails, and plenty of room to spread out for a picnic or play games together. It's an easy place to spend several hours enjoying the outdoors.

City Park

City Park is one of Denver's most iconic destinations for families.

In addition to the playgrounds and open green spaces, families can enjoy scenic lake views and pair their visit with nearby attractions like the Denver Zoo or the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for a full day of adventure.

Congress Park

Congress Park is another wonderful neighborhood park featuring a recently updated playground, plenty of open space, and a welcoming atmosphere for families.

It's also conveniently located near local coffee shops and restaurants, making it a great stop for a weekend outing.

Why Outdoor Play Matters

Time outside offers children so much more than a chance to burn off energy.

Outdoor play helps children develop:

  • Gross motor skills

  • Balance and coordination

  • Confidence

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Creativity and imagination

  • Social skills

  • Curiosity about the natural world

Whether they're climbing a new playground, collecting leaves, pretending the park is a pirate ship, or simply running through the grass with friends, every outdoor adventure supports healthy growth and development.

We hope this guide inspires your family to explore a new park this weekend. One of the greatest gifts we can give children is time to play, discover, and simply enjoy being outside—and we're fortunate to have so many wonderful places to do just that in Lakewood and Denver.

Happy exploring from all of us at The Summit Academy!
